Garage Door Springs
Functions of Garage Door Springs
Garage door springs play a vital role in lifting and lowering your garage door. When springs are properly installed and adjusted they will perform without any complications. There are two ways that a spring work, manually and automatically. If the lifting or lowering process is started manually, the springs will take over and complete the task. In automatic door openers the springs do the actual work.
Torsions and extensions are two main types of garage door springs. They are typically found in two types of garage doors; swing up doors, and sectional roll away doors. Both Swing up doors and sectional roll away doors work with two extension springs, one mounted on each side of the extending swinging arm doors.
Signs that Indicate Springs Need Replacing
When springs become tightly winded and stressed beyond their length, they are under a tremendous amount of tension or pressure. It is doing this time that the springs are vulnerable to mechanical and physical failure, due to corrosion, misalignment, and maladjustment. Damaged or broken springs make it difficult to lift or lower garage doors. In some cases, garage doors becomes free to fly up in the air.
In some instances, garage doors may experience significant mechanical failure, which results in deadly and danger accidents. There are many tracks, rollers, springs, arms and other parts that can pop, snap, or break. Such mechanical failures often lead to a garage door falling on top of a person or vehicle.
Ways to Prevent Damage to Garage Door Springs
Springs come in different sizes and lengths, depending on the model of the doors. Garage doors range in weights that are specifically designed for certain spring types, so the right size springs must accommodate the weight of the doors. When signs of wear and tear occur, it is best not to wait until the garage door falls apart, or crashes, or falls on top of an object or person.
It is best to check the garage doors periodically, and pay close attention to squeaks, and other noises. Garage doors that are difficult to lift and lower can indicate the beginning of one or more serious problems. If one or more components of the garage doors are non-functional, damaged or broken, this puts extra tension on the springs to perform. Replace tracks, cables, drums, and rollers that appear misaligned, maladjusted, or damaged in any way.
